Friend, mentor, & teacher. Hanging with Bob Reynolds after Snarky Puppy played the Kauffman Center in Kansas City.
Conducting is familiar and foreign at the same time. It presents a mental and physical challenge: how do I non-verbally communicate to these young musicians?
I love this photo captured by Silvia Sorak. I was using a lot of effects on my saxophone and also playing EWI. It was a life-changing event and I'm thankful every day that I got to experience that energy and that crowd.
In 2015, I got to play with Denny Laine. I was asked to play on the song Listen to What the Man Says written by Denny and Paul McCartney. Before walking on stage, Denny said to me: "You know, when we performed this song in Wings, we never had a saxophonist play it with us...this is a first for me...I mean, we had Tom Scott record in the studio with us but never had a saxophonist with us in concert." I'm still giggling about that.
I got to meet and hear Donny McCaslin in Des Moines on the Beyond Now tour in 2016. His approach to playing has seriously inspired me.
One of my first saxophone heroes was Eric Leeds. He played with Prince and his style had a huge impact on my playing. I got to meet him when I saw him play in Minneapolis with his band LP Music in 2015.
